Happy New Year! 2021 is here! What is your vision for this year? As a family, we are focusing on creating as many memories as we can during this decade. It’s crazy to think of all that has happened in the last 10 years. It’s even crazier to think of what’s in store for the next 10! Our kids will almost all be grown and out creating their own adventures.
For us, travel has become one of our favorite family adventures. Although last year has put a halt on many of our plans and this year is still pretty up in the air, we are doing our best to find safe, local options to still cure those winter blues. Whether it is a staycation in our amazing home town, or dreaming of a far away destination–the experiences always create family moments we will all cherish for the rest of our lives.
Enough of our sappy story, now is the perfect time to start planning your next adventures. Not only can you find great deals this time of year, but many locations are free from the hustle and bustle of the summer season and feel more like a private escape.

Royal Gorge Cabins in Colorado
I’ve shared how much we loved visiting Royal Gorge Cabins in Colorado during our rafting adventure a couple of summers ago. They also make an amazing romantic getaway if you’re looking to plan a special Valentines Day this year. Year round they make an incredible destination, but our winter family visit a couple of years ago more than exceeded our expectations.
As the thriving summer fun dissipates through the fall, winter transforms to a quiet and cozy escape. Stepping inside one of the incredible cabins feels like home. Take a look at the quick video tour to see just how amazing they are.
We opted to make many of our meals in the kitchenette, but there are many delicious restaurant options nearby to grab a bite to take back to the cabin. Pizza Madness has a fun atmosphere and delicious pizza. Mugs also has great food.

Although the area isn’t bustling with summer tourists ready to float down the river, there is still plenty to do. The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is open year round. You’ll also find the Museum of Colorado Prisons, open Wednesday through Sunday from 10-5 through the winter. We visited the Holy Cross Abbey and Winery and the Royal Gorge Route Railroad also runs year round.
In the cabin we played games, watched movies and soaked in the stunning views of the golden sun setting over the white-capped Sangre de Cristo mountain range. It was relaxing, rejuvenating and a great way to break those winter blues and create memories as a family. The Royal Gorge Cabins are a perfect hub to summer activities, but the quiet, quaint, peacefulness of our winter getaway is going to be pretty hard to beat. Plus, the winter rate specials make the adventure that much sweeter.
