Back in my day…
Seriously though, I’m not going to tell you about how I had to walk up hill both ways to school in the snow or any of that, but I am going to tell you about the dark ages. Dark because well, there was no pale blue glow of a cell phone light in your face. We played with toys and games and puzzles! The Rubik’s cube was quite popular when I went to school. You either had fun with them, or were completely frustrated by them, but it was something that was interesting. No matter how many times I’d set it down and walk away, I would eventually pick it back up and try again. I couldn’t watch YouTube videos to learn the algorithms and I probably never actually solved it, but it was fun!
Today’s Puzzles
Fast forward to now. One day my son came home from school asking for a cube and I was amazed! Wow, everything really does make a comeback! Only he didn’t want just any cube, he had specifications. He opened my eyes to the “world of cubing” and the vast collection of puzzles available. There are puzzles in all shapes and sizes, and for all cubing abilities. There are even cubes made specifically for competition. While I always dreamed of just being able to solve the thing, these days it’s all about how fast you are able to do it, if you can do it blindfolded, how many moves it takes you, you name it.
Puzzles For Gifts
I’m always looking for something to entertain the kids on road trips or long flights and bonus points if it challenges their growing brains a little. The cubes and puzzles available from thecubicle.us are perfect for such occasions! There are clubs and such at school so, my middle school-er was already interested, but the little ones love them too! My 5-year-old has almost mastered solving a couple of the easier ones! Not only do they provide hours of entertainment and an easy way to impress family and friends–they’re affordable! Many of the puzzles are under $10!

We had the opportunity to try out the following models. They were all great, but for beginners especially, I recommend the Pyraminx and the 2×2 model! However, every house should have a 3×3 as well!
